| For the price of a new Honda Accord, you could be driving the ultimate in road-going luxury: Rolls-Royce. Built to replace the elegant Silver Shadow, the Silver Spirit was still a traditional Rolls-Royce luxury sedan that looked truly imposing, and today represents perhaps the ultimate status symbol. Nobody else has to know how little you really paid to own it. The diamond white paint is factory original and shows you exactly how much quality Rolls-Royce put into every car they built. In short, it looks fantastic for being 28 years old. They used modern materials in 1986, but it was the application and the subsequent polishing that gives this car its wonderful soft shine that simply looks like money on wheels. Fit and finish were, of course, the envy of the world, for few other manufacturers could afford to dedicate the man-hours to getting every panel virtually perfect. The doors open and close on hushed hinges and seal up like airlocks, and with a full history from new, you know this one has never been hit or damaged. There will be no mistaking this car out on the road, either, as the prominent Rolls-Royce grille stands proud, complete with Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament. The rest remains understated, however, but given the car's stature and finish quality, everyone who sees it will understand that it is something special. After all, there are very few people who don't know a Rolls-Royce when they see it. THAT's some brand recognition. Elegance is standard equipment in every Rolls-Royce built, and the lovely tan leather interior is as tasteful as the Queen's wardrobe. Leather hides are the finest in the world with an aroma that is worth the price of admission all by itself. Contrasting brown carpets add a sophisticated look that's easier to maintain than something lighter, and work especially well with the genuine burled walnut dashboard and trim. Lovely Jaeger instruments look and act like fine timepieces and every switch on the dashboard is chrome-plated metal, not plastic, so they feel substantial to your fingers. Everything was standard, including A/C, power windows, a tilt column, and cruise control, and while the AM/FM/cassette stereo looks like it was borrowed from the GM parts bin, it does sound good, especially in the hushed interior. The beautifully trimmed boot (that's what the English call the trunk) offers the same high-grade carpet and enough space for all of the lordship's baggage. Rolls-Royce used a six-and-three-quarter litre V8 for years, and in 1986, it was still rated as having adequate horsepower. It's silent and muscular, the perfect bodyguard for quick exits and unobtrusive cruising. The engine bay is beautifully and professionally maintained, and while fixing one of these can be a headache, the ones that are consistently maintained in good order, such as this one, are easy and a pleasure to own. A 4-speed automatic transmission shifts so smoothly it can barely be felt, and while the suspension is soft, it is fully independent for superior performance, and four-wheel disc brakes stop all 5000 pounds without strain. 15-inch steel wheels wear color-matched hubcaps and understated 235/70/15 Michelin radials.
