DESCRIPTION
Sometimes it's best to pick up someone else's finished project rather than start your own. This 1968 Camaro is a great case in point-an expensive repaint with better than average finish work, a small block under the hood with a lot of nicely detailed go-fast parts, and an interior with a lot of new components. Spend a few weekends putting your own touches on this Camaro, and you'll be money and time ahead. This summer, drive your dream instead of working on it in the driveway. Originally Tahoe Turquoise with a black vinyl top, this handsome Camaro now sports a two-month-old coat of Dark Red Ruby Pearl that looks like a spectacular 21st century version of Madeira Maroon. A considerable amount of effort resulted in the very straight body panels, including new fenders and quarters, which ensure that this car is rust-free and solid throughout. After a few weeks of block sanding and alignment, the two-stage urethane went on, and the results speak for themselves with great gloss and a deep finish that would be hard to duplicate using 1968 paint technology. A white SS stripe was added around the nose and down the flanks, and while it appears a little wider than stock, it definitely gives the car a predatory, aggressive appearance. The stainless trim was properly straightened and polished, and correct Camaro SS badges were fitted to the front fenders. A new cowl induction hood and a ducktail spoiler out back complete the classic look. The black bucket seat interior definitely has the basics covered, with new seat covers, fresh carpets, and clean door panels that make this F-body look a lot younger than 43 years old. You've probably noticed the bright red dashboard, which is clearly not original, but is definitely a place where you could spend some time and either return it to stock condition or do something to put your own twist on the car. A large tachometer has been affixed to the traditional spot on top of the steering column, and is easily seen through the spokes of the leather-wrapped Grant GT steering wheel. A trio of white-faced auxiliary gauges was mounted down low, right below the Blaupunkt AM/FM/cassette stereo system. There's a Hurst shifter and white cue ball knob atop the Muncie 4-speed, and who doesn't love the aggressive, industrial look of the shifter poking out of the transmission tunnel? The back seat is a rare fold-down unit that accesses the finished trunk with a reproduction mat, where you'll also find a power antenna mounted on the rear deck. This car definitely has the right equipment under the hood, where there's a 400 cubic inch small block V8 correctly dressed in Chevy Orange and rebuilt just 250 miles ago. The 400 is a neat fit under that cowl induction hood, and makes all the right sounds thanks to a big Holley 4-barrel up top and a set of Competition Plus long-tube headers. There's a lot of brightwork under there, too, including a polished intake manifold, chrome alternator bracket, valve covers, and an open element air cleaner. To make driving easy, power steering and brakes are part of the package, and all the workmanship is professionally done. The engine turns the aforementioned Muncie M21 4-speed manual and a 12-bolt rear full of acceleration-friendly 4.11 gears on a Posi limited slip. Those lovely ceramic-coated long tube headers dump into a custom dual exhaust system using Flowmaster mufflers for just the right tone. The front suspension features tubular lower A-arms, new shocks, and a fat anti-sway bar, while the rear end hangs on the original leaf springs, which are still the best way to fly if straight-line performance is your goal. A new gas tank, fresh lines and hoses, and rebuilt brakes make this a safe, reliable piece, which means fewer hassles in the garage and more time on the road. And it gets just the right amount of rake in its stance from a set of Torque Thrust D wheels wearing 225/60/15 front and 255/60/15 rear BFGoodrich T/A radial tires. There's no such thing as a perfect car, and I like to think of this one as 90 complete. The heavy lifting is already done, with spectacular bodywork and a strong-running small block under the hood. What remains is up to you-perhaps a freshened interior that looks more original (or more outrageous). Or you could just leave it as-is and have one heck of a nice cruiser this summer. With under 250 miles on the engine, fewer than 2000 on the transmission, and paint that's two months old, this is a very fresh car that has been fully sorted. Take advantage of this opportunity to drive an awesome big block Camaro with all the right parts for a fraction of the cost of doing it yourself. Call today!
