| DESCRIPTION |
| The truth is, Rolls-Royce motorcars ARE special. They drive differently, the materials that surround you inside are vastly nicer than the stuff in lesser cars, and everyone on the road, young or old, recognizes one of these high-dollar rollers when they're moving down the road. This 1977 Silver Shadow is an excellent example of Rolls-Royce's most popular model. The upright, traditional sedan body style doesn't bow its head to fashion or efficiency; it was designed to be the finest vehicle on earth. Everything else is secondary to that mission. The doors still open and close with a precision that still remains to be matched by lesser vehicles. And there's simply no denying the presence that the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament carries. Only the British seem to be able to create interiors that are both informal and traditional. You slip into the driver's chair because it's familiar and welcoming, and the leather has an aromatic quality that reminds you of hushed corridors with thick carpets and ornate brass fixtures. The wood dashboard is indeed real walnut about three-quarters of an inch thick, cut and fitted by a master carpenter so that it is completely unique to this very car. The switchgear, vents, and other controls are chrome-plated metal, not plastic, and you can feel their solidity through their movement. All the conveniences you'd expect are here, too, including power windows, air conditioning, cruise control, and a period Blaupunkt fitted into the console between the seats. In back, there are footrests for passengers and enough legroom to make first-class passengers on an Air Korea flight jealous. Even the trunk is masterfully upholstered in thick Wilton wool carpeting bound with contrasting cream leather. Rolls-Royce also understands that the ultimate luxury is performance, and endowed the Shadow with a 6.75-liter V8 with impressive torque and impeccable manners. The folks in Crewe never revealed their horsepower numbers, instead choosing to suggest that it was adequate, but this Roller makes enough torque to aim the nose skyward if you're too aggressive on the throttle. The transmission is a rugged GM TH400 3-speed automatic, so service is easy and inexpensive, while the original air spring suspension has been replaced by standard hydraulic shocks which both improve the handling and reduce maintenance costs. Four-wheel discs and a fully independent suspension are nice by-products of luxury, and it rides on a set of 225/75/15 whitewall radials with original wheelcovers.
