| I'll tell you how much this wonderful 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II cost to build in a moment, but before I do that, think about what Rolls-Royce means. Quality. Luxury. And even style, in a certain Old World way. The downside? Staggering maintenance bills and, well, tepid performance from a six-cylinder engine. After spending more than $87,000 on this Silver Cloud, it is as reliable as your father's Oldsmobile, just as luxurious and stately as a Rolls-Royce, but with parts availability from the local auto parts store. Perhaps we should call it what it really is: the ultimate resto-mod. There's no mistaking the shape of a Rolls-Royce, and the hand-formed flanks are as gorgeous and upscale today as they were in 1961, perhaps even more so. The Silver Clouds were some of the last hand-built Rollers, and that attention to detail that made them famous is apparent in every curve of the body and every facet of the sterling silver grille shell. Still showing strong ties to the pre-war coachbuilt cars, the Silver Cloud is opulence on wheels; if your interests tend towards making a grand entrance and travelling first class, then this is still the best way to travel. And based on those receipts, there were no cut corners anywhere on the restoration of the bodywork. It's uniformly straight, flat, and well-aligned, just as it was when it was new. The interior is pure Rolls-Royce with no questionable modifications-remember that the intent was only to cure the Rolls-Royce's Achilles' heel, not transform its character. As a result, the deep, plush leather-covered sofas fore and aft are decadently soft and immensely comfortable. The carpet is probably the same Wilton wool used by the factory, and all that polished wood actually is polished wood, not a thin veneer. Elegant tray tables fold out from the seat backs for the busy executive on the move, and thoughtful upgrades like a powerful AM/FM/CD entertainment system have been added. All the original gauges work as they should, and the delightful thin-rimmed steering wheel guides the car effortlessly. Under the skin, however, this car is 100 rugged American sedan, eliminating the troublesome British bits. The chassis is a 1980 Oldsmobile Delta 88, and its comfortable ride and sense of wafting along are well-received in the big Rolls. A new 350 cubic inch crate motor and 700R4 transmission were installed in 2003, and power the car with a mere burble from the tailpipe in true Rolls-Royce fashion. Performance is notably improved over the original, although this car is not about speed. It's effortless. Luxury features like ice cold A/C, power steering, and effective power brakes are all included, and it rides on a set of original wheels with full wheelcovers and whitewall radials for a traditional look.
