| DESCRIPTION |
| Recreations have been around as long as there have been special cars. To put the extraordinary in the hands of the average person is a noble effort, and some versions are more successful than others. This handsome 1934 Mercedes 500K replica is one of the better ones, with excellent proportions and a very authentic look, not to mention a load of modern comfort and convenience features that even the original could only dream of. Based on a long-wheelbase Dodge Dakota chassis with a hand-laid fiberglass body by Heritage, the original 500K's most dramatic features-those sweeping fenders with delicate side skirts-have been perfectly replicated here. Fit and finish is excellent, and it's quite obvious that this was never a build-it-yourself-in-your-garage kit, but rather a fully engineered and manufactured automobile built to very high standards. The proportions are right, and there's no evidence of the mainstream components that live underneath; aside from the radials, most casual observers might be convinced by the illusion. Built in 1990, paint and bodywork are still in outstanding condition with very few signs of use and there's certainly no damage in its history. Robust equipment includes the heavy-duty door hinges for the rear-mounted doors, the bright chrome grille, bumpers, and headlamps, and a unique split windshield that looks far more accurate than some of the other replicas that use MGB components. The interior is a modern interpretation of a classic, with black leather, tons of burled walnut, and a very upright and proper driving position. The seat was obviously lifted from a late-model luxury car, but the glove-soft leather seating is exactly right in this neo-classic chariot. Elegant cream-faced gauges from Classic Instruments are centered in the instrument panel, as was the tradition in the 1930s, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel with the famous Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star is a thoughtful touch. A/C, a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo system, and an automatic transmission make driving this roadster effortless. Overhead, the folding convertible top is in excellent shape and seals up well, and the trunk compartment is fully upholstered. Under that long, elegant hood is a tightly packaged 350 cubic inch Chevy V8, which moves the big roadster with a muted rumble that's quiet enough to be luxurious but appropriately muscular. All the power accessories have been tucked in there as well, including power steering and power disc brakes, and the rugged Dakota chassis eliminates squeaks and rattles. A custom front suspension is an upgrade over the truck-based setup, while a live axle out back assures a smooth ride. A TH350 3-speed automatic is the right choice in a car like this, and again, the engineering throughout is impressive. It rides on timeless chrome wire wheels wearing 215/70/15 whitewall radials, with a matching spare out back. With full service records and an extensive parts catalog, this is also a car you can buy with confidence. All the elegance of a vintage Mercedes with the performance and reliability of a modern car.
