DESCRIPTION
Pop culture has rediscovered the 1964 Impala SS, and as a result prices are skyrocketing on the best examples like this lovely Palomar Red Sport Coupe. It also offers a healthy 327 cubic inch V8, a beautiful black bucket seat interior, and a long list of recent service items that make it mechanically 100 ready to cruise. Given the finish on this car, you could be forgiven for thinking that is a modern color, but that's how code 948 Palomar Red Metallic is supposed to look. In person, it's the ideal color for a car that so neatly bridges performance and luxury. Body panels are straight, panel gaps are at least as good as the factory did it, and everything lines up like it should. And on a car like this Impala, that's doubly important due to the long horizontal trim pieces with the unique SS machine-turned inserts. All the chrome looks awfully good, too, including the bumpers, rear panel with more machine turning, and those six distinctive round taillights that by 1964 were an Impala trademark. Kudos to the original owner for selecting black bucket seats with a console in his new Impala SS. Nothing says luxury performance quite as well as a fully appointed interior with comfortable buckets and all that bright trim that was standard equipment in the early '60s. This car also features a factory tachometer mounted front and center above the steering column, clearly a case of the factory following trends. More engine turned panels on the dash and console let the SS owner know that his car is something special. And that simple, 2-spoke steering wheel gives it a real vintage performance feel. New equipment includes the headliner, rear package shelf, sun visors, and floor mats. An older refresh of the engine bay gave the 327 a coat of Chevy Orange paint, which has mellowed to a usable level where you don't have to worry about driving it. It actually looks highly authentic, and like the interior, the line between original and replacement parts is blurry enough that there's essentially no difference. No power steering or brakes mean that this car was probably ordered for its ability to go fast more than for tooling around town looking for a parking place at the supermarket. Underneath, it's about what you'd expect from a car nearing its 50th birthday, with solid floors and no evidence of prior accident damage. The exhaust system hugs the X-frame as original, but now sports a set of glasspack style mufflers that give it a very aggressive rumble. The 4-speed manual transmission offers slick shifting thanks to a Hurst shifter, and the suspension has been recently refurbished with new ball joints, tie rods, pitman arm, and rear springs. Correct SS hubcaps on the original steel wheels use modern whitewall radials for a comfortable ride. Go ahead and shop around for other '64 Impalas. We can almost guarantee few will have this one's combination of looks, performance, and recent work. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
