DESCRIPTION
1972 is an interesting year for Camaros, and many enthusiasts don't know how close they came to losing their beloved pony car forever. A strike at the Norwood assembly plant shut down Camaro production for 174 days, drastically shortening the 1972 model year and making the cars quite rare. The Nova line was moved away from Norwood to protect it from future labor issues, and GM seriously debated killing the Camaro outright. With tightening emissions and safety standards, the rising price of gasoline, and tightening insurance regulations, the market was hurting. Some estimates suggest that 39,000 Camaros and Firebirds WEREN'T built in 1972, costing dealers as much as $125 million. That's a lot of non-existent Camaros! Fortunately, this gorgeous Cranberry Red SS350 was built, and survives to this day in spectacular condition. The body was completely restored not too long ago, and the workmanship is very good. Great panel alignment goes hand-in-hand with some seriously straight sheetmetal to create one of the nicer second-generation Camaros we've seen in quite a while. Of course, nothing gets your attention like a set of black SS stripes, and they have been expertly applied, beginning at the pointed grille and wrapping over the ducktail spoiler out back. For '72, Camaros got a new, larger grid on the grille, and this one carries a correct SS piece and single chrome bumper. In back, the four round taillights echo the Corvette's design creating a familiar resemblance, and the slender, almost delicate chrome bumper was in its final year. Tinted windows and a notable absence of bright trim give this SS a sinister look despite the bright red paint. Inside, the interior is fresh and clean. With deep bucket seats, the Camaro interior was extremely stylish in '72, and it hasn't gone out of style today, nearly 40 years later. Much of the interior is new, including the seat covers and foam underneath, the carpets, and the headliner, although the back seat certainly appears to be original. The dash has been modified to house new Auto Meter gauges in the original openings, and there's a cool carbon-fiber fascia in place of the original plastic. The original SS350 steering wheel was retained, and it's a classic design found in Chevys across the board. This F-body also includes factory A/C, power steering, power brakes, as well as relatively rare power windows, suggesting that the original owner ordered this one special. Aside from the gauges, the only other significant modification inside is a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo head unit in the original location. The restoration extended under the hood as well, and someone spent a lot of time dressing up this engine bay. The 350 has been rebuilt and runs very well-easy to start and with a nice rumble from the exhaust. Flash was kept to a minimum, but it's definitely dressed up, thanks to a black air cleaner housing, cast aluminum Mickey Thompson valve covers and a chrome alternator. The block appears to have been painted to match the body, although it's hard to see down there in the deep Camaro engine bay. Other details, such as the wiper motor and the brake proportioning valve have also been color matched to the body, tying the entire engine bay together. Underneath, it's clean and rust-free, with undercoated floors and a lot of recent work. The TH350 3-speed automatic drives a nicely detailed 10-bolt with a painted rear cover that also matches the body. The new exhaust system features a correct transverse muffler, and it hangs in front of a brand new gas tank. The finishing touch are some of the most handsome wheels to ever come from an OEM-Camaro SS wheels with charcoal centers wearing fat 275/60/15 BFGoodrich T/A radials. Is this a car that almost didn't get built? Hard to say, but nobody will argue that 1972 Camaros in this condition are common. 1972 was also noteworthy in that it was the last year for big block Camaros, and the chrome bumpers that look so right on these cars would vanish as well. Nicely refinished with some smart upgrades, this loaded Camaro is a lot of fun to own and drive. With those fat tires and upgraded sway bars, it handles remarkably well, and thanks to the A/C and powerful stereo, it can cruise cross-country in real comfort. Just be sure you like attention, because EVERYONE stops to watch this bright red F-body roll past. If that appeals to you, please give us a call today!
