DESCRIPTION
This super tidy first-year Plymouth Barracuda is an unusual, attention-grabbing car that's lots of fun to drive and seldom seen in a world awash with early Mustangs. If you're a Mopar guy, the much less common Barracuda is an awesome, economical, and surprisingly potent little cruiser that is a lot of fun to drive. The bright red paint is only two years old and looks fantastic on the Barracuda's unusual styling. A variant of the Valiant, it, like the Mustang, was designed to put an affordable, sporty car within reach of a youthful buying public. As a result, all the Valiant's mechanicals and much of its styling carried over, although the stunning fastback profile with that massive rear window makes it unique. The workmanship on the repaint is quite good, and as a car that you can (and should!) drive every chance you get, the quality is just right. You won't worry about an errant rain storm, but it sure shines up nicely for Sunday afternoon shows. Fit and finish are probably better than new, to be honest, and those unique quarter panels have apparently never been rusty. Chrome and stainless trim is a combination of original and restored bits, with all the correct 'Plymouth,' 'Valiant,' and 'Barracuda' badges intact. Red bucket seats have obviously been lifted from a late-model car, but the color and material match is so good, I bet you had to look twice to convince yourself they weren't original. However, it does appear that the fold-down back seat IS original, and shows you that this car has always been clean and well maintained. Matching red carpets and door panels tie everything together nicely, making this a car that you'll be happy to drive as much as show. The bright aluminum-look dashboard is a cool contrast to all the red with all the gauges fully functional, and the push-button TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic is still completely cool. Aside from the front seats, the only other notable modification is a newer AM/FM/cassette stereo head unit in the original location, feeding speakers in the trunk area, which is truly cavernous. 90 of first-year Barracuda buyers opted for the 273 cubic inch V8, which delivers great performance in the lightweight Fish, as well as reasonable fuel economy. Someone obviously spent some time going through the engine bay, as a lot of correct details are in place like the crinkle-finish air cleaner, Chrysler Orange paint (there was no Hemi Orange in 1964) on the block, and freshly restored exhaust manifolds. It runs beautifully, spinning to life easily and settling into a smooth idle. A newer single exhaust system doesn't diminish the cool sounds the little V8 makes, and it pulls through the gears easily. The light curb weight make power steering and brakes superfluous, and the car has a very direct feel to it. Color-matched steel wheels wear original hubcaps and fresh 205/70/14 radials. This Barracuda is a cool entry-level hobby car with a V8 and a great look. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
